2009 Summer Program Staff Positions

Position: Senior Camp Counselor Internship


Dates: Staff training: June 8 - 12
Camp runs:

June 15-June 26 and July 6-August 14

(no camp June 29-July 3) 


Applicants will be interviewed and candidates will be selected on the basis of maturity, interests and experience.

Hours: Monday-Friday 8:30 AM-3:30 PM

Description: The Pratt Center is a 193-acre nature education center in New Milford, CT. This is a nature-oriented, eight-week coed program for 4-12 year old children. Emphasis is on learning and having fun in the out-of-doors through creative and cooperative activities. We have a pond, river, fields, forest, mountain, farm animals, and gardens as basic resources. Our curriculum is built around several key themes: habitats, adaptations, understanding the local environment and each child’s role in the environment. These core themes are based upon the Guidelines for Learning developed by the North American Association for Environmental Education. Each week campers will explore these themes through a variety of activities, stories, games, hikes and arts and crafts.

Responsibilities: Work cooperatively as a member of the camp staff. Provide small group leadership. Ensure the safety of campers in your care. Lead games, activities and crafts. Supervise CITs (Counselors in Training) assigned to your group. Each staff member will be responsible for helping to develop the daily lesson plans for his/her group.

Qualifications: The candidate must enjoy the company of children. He/she must be self-motivated, energetic, enthusiastic and be able to provide leadership to young children doing crafts, games and nature activities in an outdoor setting. Willing to accept and follow directions. An ability to have fun and learn at the same time. Strong preference given to Education and/or Science majors and those with professional outdoor adventure skills including geocacheing, low ropes facilitation and survival skills. Knowledge of natural history is a benefit. Basic First Aid and Infant/Child CPR is strongly recommended but not required. Must be at least 18 years of age.  Must be able to attend staff training.

Salary: $275+ per week (depending on experience)

Position: Junior Camp Counselor Internship

Open to: High School students entering Junior or Senior year.

Must be at least 16 years of age.

Dates: Mandatory staff training June 8-12, 3pm-5pm.

Camp runs:

June 15-June 26 and July 6-August 14(no camp the week of June 29-July 3) 

 Hours: Monday-Friday 8:45 AM-3:15 PM

 

About the Pratt Center Summer Camp:

This is a nature oriented, eight-week coed program for 4-12 year old children. Emphasis is on learning and having fun in the out-of-doors through creative and cooperative activities. Duties:  Junior Counselor must enjoy the company of younger children and being out-of-doors. Junior Counselor will act as a floating assistant to Senior Camp Counselors.  In the event the absence of a Senior Counselor, the Junior Counselor will act as a substitute counselor.  When all counselors are present, Junior Counselor will perform other duties as listed below for Youth and Animal Care Assistants in addition to providing break time to Senior Counselors.  The ideal candidate has the ability to provide creative nature-based programming. He/she must be self-motivated, energetic, enthusiastic and be able to provide leadership to young children doing crafts, games, and nature activities in an outdoor setting. Mature, reliable and patient. Willing to accept and follow directions and have an ability to have fun and learn at the same time.  Students with an interest in teaching and science are encouraged to apply.
